australia mum: a road trip of gigantic proportions

Picture
We are a family who loves to travel. My Canadian-born husband Matt and I met in China and we, along with our kids, Emilia aged 11 and Matthew aged 6, have continued to travel. Home for us has included Melbourne, Australia; Niagara Falls, Swift Current and Cambridge in Canada; Jilin and Changchun in China; and Cusco and Arequipa in Peru. That’s just the norm.

Over one year ago we made the decision to begin a road trip in a colourfully painted VW Kombi from Cusco, Peru to Niagara Falls, Canada. A brave move seeing as we had never done anything like that before. It has been an adventure, to say the least.

worldschool magazine: 8 TIPS TO MAKE TRAVELING WITH KIDS EASIER

Picture
And no we aren’t talking about leaving them at home!

Travelling with kids, regardless of their age
, can be a very worthwhile and positive experience for the whole family.

Yes, we understand that it can be challenging
and even downright frustrating at times, so for this reason we have provided our 8 top tips to make travelling with your kids so much easier.

travelling with kids: the new norm: the helium Whale

Picture
Travelling with kids around countries like Ecuador and Colombia is not the norm, not by any stretch of the imagination. But the longer we are on the road, the more travelling families we meet. While it may not be the norm at present; the tide is turning and more and more families are taking the plunge, moving out of their comfort zone and exploring the beauty this amazing world has to offer.

living in peru: globedrop: charities seeking donations

Picture
We all like to donate money or volunteer our services to an organization in need from time to time, however, a relatively new travel initiative called GlobeDrop allows you to donate goods directly to charitable organizations and NGOs via a very helpful and modern website.

While GlobeDrop is a global organization, 22 of the charities listed on there are located in Peru, meaning that you can assist both locally and while travelling abroad.

living in peru: lake titicaca, a fun, family-friendly destination

Picture
For quite a while now Peru has been considered the mecca for the most ardent of trekkers and adventurers, the place to go if you are serious about Inca culture and ancient ruins. However, what many people seem to forget is that Peru is an amazing tourist destination for family travellers too. And not just to see Machu Picchu, or to experience the richness of the jungle in Puerto Maldonado, but to relax on the calm, clear waters of Lake Titicaca and soak in the breathtaking beauty that quickly envelops you.

We had the pleasure of visiting Lake Titicaca recently thanks to the amazing staff in the Arequipa based agency, Peru InsideOut (www.peruinsideout.com).

Inspirational artist: Jocy Terrazas: Peru this week

Picture
There is something inspirational about Cusco which artist and musician Jocy Terrazas can immediately identify with. Whether it’s the energy or something else, she can’t quite decide, but what she does know is that life would be dull without music and art.

Jocy Terrazas graduated from the School of Fine Arts “Diego Ouispe Tito” in Cusco and has since had much success with her work. Her paintings have been displayed in the Santo Domingo gallery in Qoricancha and the Museum of Contemporary Art in Cusco and she is currently working on a couple of long term projects, a continuation of her liberation trips display in 2014 and other works focussing on women as a spiritual being.

And off we went: A Peruvian adventure: Peru this week

Picture
Meet Michelle Tupy, a woman of many hats who, alongside her family, is exploring Peru for the first time!

Come March 2015, we are planning on heading back to Canada – but not on a plane this time. We are going to drive from Cusco to Niagara Falls in a VW Kombi so that we can enjoy more of what Peru and other South and Central American countries have to offer.

And we plan to write a book about our adventure allowing other families to see that it is possible to undertake such an extensive journey such as this.

world schooling by name and nature: raising miro

Picture
World schooling has been part and parcel of our children’s lives since they were born. Emilia was born in Australia and has lived in Australia, China, Canada and Peru – she is 9. Matthew was born in Australia and has lived in Australia, Canada and Peru – he is 4.

World schooling even before we identified it for ourselves was already well ingrained into our lives as a natural part of learning.

We have dipped in and out of structured school – our daughter attended school in Canada for a number of years although quite honestly, she never enjoyed the traditional approach.
